Two years ago, I was a frequent visitor to our local urgent care. Not by choice of course, but due to my toddlers and myself catching every cold and strains of flu it seemed imaginable. We opted not to receive the flu shot, and never have, but managed to evade the flu and major coughs and cold until then. Two years ago, things changed, and I was contemplating, should we have got the flu shot, would it have made a difference? I will never know the answer to that question for sure, but what I can tell you is what has made a difference since. This gem has made such a difference, my boys and I have not had any major colds or flu since incorporating it into our wellness regimen.
Black Elderberry Syrup has done wonders for my family. Suggested by a friend, who happens to be a pharmacist, after the frequent bouts with cold viruses and what was at a time, very weak immune systems. According to herbwisdom.com, Black Elderberry (Sambucus) contain organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitamin A and B and a large amount of vitamin C. The syrup is taken by mouth usually a tablespoon serving size, one to two times daily, as needed.
The brand I would most recommend is by Gaia, they offer a kids and adult version. The kids version includes organic sugar cane, water, organic honey, natural flavor from lemon juice, and of course the main ingredient of black elderberry. Trust me, with this flavor; this is one medi herb that will be taken with no hassle by your children. My toddlers take their elderberry with ease, as it has a refreshing taste and they are believers too. At the onset of a cough, my 3 year old reminds me, “I need my elderberry”!
The Gaia brand elderberry syrup (3-4oz) will cost you between $13-20 dollars depending on the kid and adult version and if it’s on sale or not. I’ve purchased from amazon before with next day shipping from Amazon prime, and it is well worth the price considering the elderberry contains no artificial ingredients, or preservatives, and it supports a healthy immune system.
I have been asked if Elderberry in the plant form would be more effective to take versus the syrup. In the raw form, Elderberry can be poisonous, so it is recommended that the berry be cooked. The syrup is just as effective as the boiling the berry. What is most important is the source of your Elderberry, I have purchased black elderberry syrup from different manufactures and it has not been as effective as the Gaia brand, because the other versions contained preservatives and other additives, which dilute the elderberry and limit its potency. For this reason, do your research and check the ingredient label before you purchase. There is a kid’s version that contained high fructose corn syrup, the hypocrisy!
I would recommed that you consult with your physician to ensure Elderberry syrup is recommened for your family to take.
Treat your immune system to some black elderberry today, and let us know how effective it's been this season for your household. Cheers to your health!
I don’t know about you, but this year has flown by for me. Have you ever looked at your list of resolutions you started at the beginning of the year and notice a few things you have yet to check off but the next year is quickly approaching? I used to be that person, every year. Then I thought better of waiting until a new year to make changes that I wanted to make strides towards immediately.
Two things to expect as topics of discussions when approaching a new year are holiday parties and resolutions. I almost cringe at the latter.. SO THIS THING CALLED NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?! WHY, WHY WHY? I think creating New Year Resolutions are done with the best intentions, but are usually not fulfilled because of the lack of motivation. This quote by Thomas Jefferson sums my sentiments up perfectly - “Never put off tomorrow what you can do today."
Resolutions are meant to decree and commit to change in your life. No one lives a perfect life, so if you know there are areas in which you can improve, things that you should be doing to lead a healthier life and obligations that you should be keeping, why would you wait until a new year? Why not start now? You really don’t need a new year as an excuse to be the best you can be. A resolution should be made on a daily basis and not once a year. Focus on making every day better than the last and you won’t have to purge away your ‘faults' at the end of the year. When your motivation is conjured daily, you will see your results are more obtainable. As we draw near to 2018, focus in the results you can get today.
Something that I have found rather difficult to do is to be in total control of my emotions in moments of anger, frustration, or disappointment.
Anyone that says they are always in control must be an expert! Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that I have a punching bag or a box of Kleenex at my immediate exposure. However, I do consider myself a rational person and I can’t help to want others to be the same way. When they’re not? Let’s just say I know where to find that punching bag.
On a more serious note, I have learned over the years that it is much more advantageous to take a deep breath in the heat of the moment rather than reacting quickly. When we aren’t in control of our emotions, on many occasion the result is saying or doing something that may be regrettable. When you allow yourself to exhale, you give yourself time to remember that your happiness is too important to invite thoughts of anger. I was a retail manager for several years. I can recall many occasions when people assumed that just because I was in a role of service that they did not have to respect me. This is obviously incorrect in any environment, but especially in a professional environment, you cannot allow yourself to react; doing so wouldn't be a good reflection of your company and it could cost you your job.
What do you do in this situation? For starters, keep your composure and smile. The person will realize that you are too level headed to match their ignorance and will either mirror your calmness, try again to provoke you, or walk away defeated and attempt to gain control of their emotions like yours. It really does require a lot of self control to remain a constant state of joy when someone or something has disappointed you. However practice makes perfect. After a while you will learn to let things roll off your shoulder with more ease. As a result you will have more energy to devote to something else.
When you get angry, you spend too much time worrying about who made you mad, why they did what they did, and what to do to get even. I not saying to never speak your peace; as adults we should be able to communicate effectively without escalating the moment. But when you don’t get angry in moments of distress, you're able to move on to the next thing.
In the words of the famous Bart Simpson, “Don’t have a cow man”!
Have you ever gone through a situation and wondered when will it ever end? Chances are it isn’t the first time you’ve asked yourself that question and it won't be the last. There are a few things that we can expect from life and that is, it will be filled with a ton of ups and downs and it is quite unpredictable. I know there are plenty people, myself included, that would love to know how to plan an escape out of a maze, but the fact of the matter is, sometimes you just have to go through the trenches and know that you’re bound to make your way out.
When you go through tough times you have to remember that it is a part of the circle of life, and often times when one thing goes well, some other ruckus is brewing in the background. So don’t cry woe is me, know that there are thousands of other people that are fighting through their own individuals battles. These people are coping and coming out victorious and so can you. You just have to dig a little deeper and focus on what motivates you to endure those less than idea situations. Wouldn’t you get curious if you never had to face any obstacles? You would start to get the feeling that you are a character in a movie rather than a human being going through life. Which would you prefer, an always perfect scenario that doesn’t afford you the luxury of self growth and development. Or going through trails and tribulations and always coming out stronger than you ever have and character to match.
Tough times don’t last forever, but the foundation of a tough person does. Whenever you are faced with those less than perfect occasions, take a moment and dig a little deeper and use what motivates you as fuel to land you to your next mission.
When you are a positive person and have an optimistic outlook on life, positively, great things will happen in your life. If you find it difficult being happy for someone else's success or good fortunate, it's time to evaluate your life and find out why it bothers you to see other's win. I was always taught to never be envious of what someone else has, because you don't know what they did to get it, how hard they worked, or the favor God has on their life. God broke the mold when he made you, walk in your own destiny. Whatever you desire in life; work hard, love hard, and pray harder. I'm in competition with no one but myself, and I challenge myself to be a better person than I was the day before. Go get it (your name) ! Remember to show kindness to others in your own pursuit of walking in your destiny, for there will be others that are instrumental to your journey to personal fulfillment.
The Golden Rule was one of the first sets of values we learned as children. “Do unto others as you would have them do until you”, yet it seems we have lost sight of that. As a parent and adult it is important that we set an example for the younger generation. Show kindness when it's not given, love when it's not reciprocated, and forgiveness even if your heart is not ready. You are what put out and the more goodness you give the greater you become!
The fear of the unknown is a powerful emotion, what is even more powerful is knowing that possibilities are endless in what you can achieve. So many people let fear hinder their true potential simply because they lack the confidence and motivation to follow their dreams or can’t imagine the failure of acting on a powerful and passionate whim. What should inspire you to act on things you can do today is the notion that tomorrow is not promised. Would you really want to live your life knowing that there was something that your heart desired, but you could never commit to it because you did not know how it would turn out? That’s why we live this thing call life. You will not know the results of everything you ever commit to! If we did, then we just might have our self a good ole’ utopia, and what’s the risk in that.
In every risk there is a reward, your hard work will lead you down a path of success, or to a journey of experience. Think about it. Is there something you want to try, a venture you want to start up, some words you want to get published? Now ask your self, what is standing in your way? 8 times out of 10, I believe the answer will be YOU. However cliché it made sound, but I love NIKE for this, sometimes you just have to get out there and “Do It”. The most difficult part of trying is taking the first step, then it’s like riding a bike, you never forget the feeling of confidence meeting ambition. Yes I know, words are letters that need to be made actionable. Here are four steps to get your thinking to doing!
What other two-letter word that you can think of, that is more powerful than the word NO? Even dating back to when you were a child, when you asked your parents for something and they said no, it just made you desire what you were asking for even more. Hearing the word no reminds you of the forbidden fruit, you just wonder why you can’t have what you think is at your disposal. Fast forward a few years to your adolescence and adulthood and you have probably heard the word no a million times more. The only difference now is as an adult you have the power to preserver if its worth having when you hear the word no.
I am sure by now you have heard that you are the master of your fate, and I believe that is absolutely true. Whatever you want out of life you have a pretty good chance of getting if you work hard enough. There will be times when people tell you no and that does not mean that your fate is sealed, it just means if there’s a will there will be another way to seal the deal. Some people hear no on many occasions and rejection feels all too common. Nevertheless, when it seems like nothing is going your way, you have to believe in yourself and work a little harder to reach your goals. Then, no was powerful because hearing it you felt restricted, there was nothing you could do to change those words. Now, no is powerful because hearing it enables you to try for different results.
Even though in the heat of the moment you might not want to, I feel at some point in life we should all face rejection. I think rejection promotes humbleness as well as dismantles the spirit of complacency. If everything in life is always simple then it becomes a little more difficult for you to study for when you finally have that test, you think you already have all the answers! When you have been told no before, when you hear a yes, you can learn to appreciate the opportunity that much more. There are times when the no you hear truly is because things are just not meant to be and you honestly just have to move on. You can discern in your heart when you have a fighting chance, and the no you hear might be just the motivation you need to pull you through to the other side.
Take care of yourself from the inside out. Treat your mind, body, and soul well. Live a life that is pleasing. Colossians 1:10 "That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God."
